Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; Cause Your face to shine, And we shall be saved!" /> Hosea 14:7Y rhai a arhosant dan ei gysgod ef a ddychwelant: adfywiant fel ŷd, blodeuant hefyd fel y winwydden: bydd ei goffadwriaeth fel gwin Libanus." The Welsh Revival

Loughor, South Wales - October 1904

Two men are strolling through a garden together one evening, enjoying each other's company. Sydney, Evan's best friend was in a gaze, staring at the moon. "What are you looking at? What do you see?", enquired young Evan. Before he had managed to finish his sentence, Evan saw it too. Coming from the Moon was what appeared to be an outstretched arm pointing towards Cymru, known as 'The Land of Revival'... 'The Land of Song'. Evan had been praying desperately to see 100,000 souls saved...

From a young age, Evan Roberts had been an unusual child. While other children his age participated in sports, amusements and coarse joking, Evan would work in the mines on a daily basis. He would then come home and walk to his church, Moriah Chapel which was over a mile away. He had experienced his very first encounter with God at the age of thirteen, at which point he vowed to give his life over to God. The phrase 'What would Jesus do?' became an obsession to him. It is also said that Evan would take his Bible to the mines with him and at one time, a fire swept through the mine that he was working in which resulted in everything in it's path being destroyed with exception to his Bible.

Evan was given approval to start a number of small youth meetings in his church. He had a heart for revival and felt called to train intercessers. On the 31st October, the meeting that he was leading quickly grew into a major move of the Holy Spirit. As opposed to preaching from behind the pulpit, Evan would walk up and down the isles, enquiring of the congregation whilst they sat in the pews which was unheard of. Even the children were taught to pray morning and night for God to 'send the Spirit to Moriah for Jesus Christ's sake!'

100,000 Saved

These services would go on through the night and sometimes end at 4am the following morning. Crowds would gradually start to appear at 6am outside the doors of the chapel, people eager to enter the chapel to hear young Evan. His services were full of laughing, crying, dancing, joy and brokenness. Women fell onto their knees and men laid in the isle weeping, laughing and praying. The meetings had no choirs or special ceremonies. There were no sermons as such, no offerings, hymnbooks, committees, song-leaders or paid advertising. Man's set pattern went out the window as God was showing up and taking over.  God was doing it all!

Such was the effect of the move of God on the whole country that political meetings were cancelled. Football matches had lack of both players and fans as most wanted to attend the revivals. Theaters had to be shut down due to lack of business. Firms that sold alcohol or promoted gambling went out of business. Former prostitutes started to hold Bible studies. Local stores were unable to keep Bibles in stock due to high demand. The donkeys that would pull the coal out of the mines had to be retrained as they did not understand the new language that had a lack of profanity and cursing in it!

Word of the revival had spread by the end of the first week. Newspaper reporters were turning up and news of the revival was on every front page nationally. Even some reporters themselves eneded up getting saved when going to the meetings to create a report. These revival meetings were unlike anything ever seen in Wales.  Soon, word of what was occurring was traveling across the world. Those in South Africa, Russia, india, Ireland, Norway, Canada and Holland were rushing to Wales. Californian Evangelist Frank Bartleman wrote to Evan asking how to bring the revival to America. Evan replied, listing the principles that he said the Spirit had revealed to him;-

  • 1) Confess all known sin
  • 2) Search out all secret and doubtful things in the heart
  • 3) Confess the Lord Jesus as Saviour openly
  • 4) Pledge that you would fully obey the Holy Spirit.

Frank Bartleman would play a key role in the Azusa Street revival two years later in 1906. The revival in Wales had started a worldwide hunger for God!

Miracle Valley, Arizona - 1963

A young man lays stretch out across his bed weeping. In his hand, a photograph of the Welsh mountains and valleys. Richard was born in Newport, Wales on the 13th March 1945. Night after night he would cry out to God for a new moving of the Spirit in the Land of Song. During his time at Miracle Valley, Richard witnessed God's hand moving in the miraculous as thousands were saved, healed or delivered under the anointed ministry of God's man of faith and power, Evangelist A. A. Allen.

Miracle Valley, Arizona - 1966

The Vietnam war had started and the US government were now proceeding to process US immigrants that had migrated over and become US citizens. Richard was amongst these. God had to perform miracle after miracle to return Richard to Wales, he did not want to depart from Miracle Valley. Upon his departure, A. A. Allen prophesied over Richard and declared that "a time would come when his very faith itself would be put to the test... Yet, after that time, God would yet again visit his motherland in a way that was greater than before!" The first part of that prophesy has already been fulfilled - sadly, the Lord took Richard's wife in 1995 which has consequently taken it's toll on Richard. We are now waiting for God to fulfill the second part of this prophesy...
